INTERVIEW:

  1. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

Right now, I plan to keep writing for as long as I have ideas. I also plan to world-hop as I have always done. So if you were hoping for an immediate sequel to any of my books…I’m sorry, you’re going to be disappointed. I’m sure that is frustrating. But, believe me, it’s for the best. If I were forced to stay in the same world with the same characters for too long, they all may just end up dead.
2. Do you belong to a critique group? If so, how does this help or hinder your writing?

I do not. I find that one-on-one critique relationships work better for me. So, I have other writers I exchange books with on a personal level. When receiving a critique from someone, you really need to trust that person, trust that he/she is truly trying to make your book better and not just being a jerk. I have more trust in individuals than I have ever had in a group setting.
3. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

I decided to submit my first book Conjuring Zephyrright after it was finished. All of my friends and family members encouraged me to submit, though they were anxious that I understand nothing would happen right away, that I would have to go through a lot of rejection before getting anywhere. As for why I made the decision, I just sort of said, “Hey, I like this story. Maybe other people will like it too. What will it hurt for me to query some agents/publishers?”
4. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

It depends on the story, but it is sort of a mix of both. I always have a very basic outline, maybe ten points of things I want to happen. But after that, I just let the characters take me. However, some stories need more plotting ahead. I had to do extensive plotting for In Search of a Witch’s Soul, my urban fantasy detective noir. With a detective story, I needed to know exactly where it was going, what clues would be revealed and when, etc.
5. Do you have any hobbies and does the knowledge you’ve gained from these carry over into your characters or the plot of your books?

Of course I have hobbies! And sometimes those hobbies show up in my writing. For instance, I like to knit and sing. The activates themselves don’t drive the plot or anything, but I do have characters who enjoy them. That makes the characters more well-rounded and relatable, and I don’t have to do tons of research for a hobby I already understand.
6. Do you have an all-time favorite book?

The Count of Monte Cristoby Alexandre Dumas
7. Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?

I am always two projects ahead (or I try to be). In March 2021, I am releasing a dieselpunk Robin Hood story called The Treason of Robyn Hood. Think of it like: what if Robyn Hood was an American woman during a dieselpunk-style WWII? And I am currently working on the sequel (more like a spin-off) of The Exiled Otherkin, my steampunk urban fantasy adventure.
8. Can you tell us a little about the black moment in your book?

Hmmm. How to do it without giving too much away…As you can probably gather from the blurb, the two lead characters of this book were not (and are not) very honest about their feelings for each other. The black moment in this book springs from that continued lack of communication. That’s all I’m going to say ;p
9. What is your favorite reality show?

I don’t like reality TV, but I do like documentaries. Anything about history, science, nature, all that. My guilty pleasure is Ancient Aliens.
10. Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to write a series?

So I have two sort of series situations. My first was when I wrote Dancing with Shades, which is the novelette prequel to In Search of a Witch’s Soul. I initially wrote it as a little freebie for my subscribers. But then people were interested in purchasing it, so we had it published. That one was pretty easy. There was a lot of stuff hinted at in In Search of a Witch’s Soulthat wasn’t totally shown, so I just filled in those blanks for readers. It helped that it was just a novelette, so it was shorter than a full novel. But right now, I am working on a sequel toThe Exiled Otherkin. Technically, it is more like a spin-off because it is a side character (Sasha) from the first book getting his own story. What I find the most challenging, as a writer who doesn’t really plot, is keeping things consistent. Because The Exiled Otherkinwas written in first person, I have a little wiggle room with what readers think they understand about Sasha. It was all from Ember’s perspective, so some of the things she explained away in her own mind were the wrong conclusions. But I still have to be consistent. I can’t have the world having different rules from the first book or having characters act so different that they aren’t even the same. But other than those minor annoyances, I am finding it fun to expound on Sasha’s character.

BLURB:

First love is hard to forget, and even harder to ignore…

Evergreen Pendre wasn’t planning on going home for Yule. But when her Mom tells her the old coven is coming for a visit, she wants to see everyone. Well, almost everyone.

After four and a half years, Sawyer Collins finally has a chance to reconnect with his first love, Eeva Pendre. He might have been too shy to tell her how he felt before, but he’s changed. And he’s determined not to let her slip away this time.

As the coven prepares for Yule, they are reminded that not everyone has the holiday spirit in this contemporary Pagan holiday romance.

EXCERPT:

Sawyer looked up just as Eeva stopped short upon entering the living room. She was still in her pajamas: flannel plaid pants with an oversized hoodie and fuzzy socks. Her long, brown hair was dyed a dark green, and it was still messy from sleep.

His heart throbbed in his chest, and he held his breath as he met her deep ocean blue eyes. His memories hadn’t done her justice.

“Hey,” he said lamely. “It’s uh…been a while.” He cleared his throat, his own voice sounding hoarse and uneven in his ears.

She blinked as if she’d forgotten who he was then frowned. “Yeah, I suppose that happens in life… How is…everything? I mean, I hope you and your mom are doing all right.” Her tone was distant and polite. Formal.

His stomach clenched as his raised hopes deflated. “Yeah, everything’s fine. We’re both good. And you?”

“Same.”

As the strained silence grew between them, Sawyer grasped for something to say. Anything. “So…my mom says you’re graduating soon. What are you studying?” He knew very well she was studying history. It didn’t matter that he’d said more times than he could count that he didn’t care. The moment his mother mentioned her, he’d always internalized the information. And he’d taken more than a few glances at her social media profiles over the years, though he’d gotten better about that.

“Eeva!” his mother called, entering the room before they could struggle on in their conversation.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

D. Lieber is an urban fantasy author with a wanderlust that would make a butterfly envious. Her love of reading led her to earn a Bachelor’s in English from Wright State University.

Beyond her skeptic and slightly pessimistic mind, Lieber wants to believe. She has been many places—from Canada to England, France to Italy, Germany to Russia—believing that a better world comes from putting a face on “other.” She is a romantic idealist at heart, always fighting to keep her feet on the ground and her head in the clouds.
