INTERVIEW:

1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

I’ve been writing for most of my life. It’s hard for me to remember when I started. But my original inspiration came from the comic books I used to read. After a while I started drawing my own comics, then I transitioned into writing short stories. Drawing is a hobby now, but writing is what I enjoy the most.

2. How did you come up with ideas for your books?

For Blood Red Moon I got the idea because of my fascination with phoenixes. They’re mythological creatures that can regenerate in fire. In this book the phoenixes are shifters. (There are also phoenix birds, but they’re not featured in this story.) I decided to tie the phoenix shifters’ regeneration with the portals that connect the worlds. There’s another story in the works that will be launched next year (a short version called, Metamorphosis, is currently part of the Pets in Space 6 sci-fi romance anthology). Since I’d never written a vampire story before, I wanted to give it a try. So, I decided to make the hero a vampire who belongs to a community of vampires who are also involved with the portals.

3. What expertise did you bring to your writing?

As far as the genres I write in, I’ve been a reader of fantasy and sci-fi for years. Actually, I started out writing Star Trek fan fiction, and transitioned into writing my own stories. I’ve had short stories published as well. In my day job I’m a tech writer and a former IT developer. So, I bring a lot of my interest in technology to my stories. Even though these particular stories are fantasy, there’s also science involved and of course tech that the portal world inhabitants use. I get to use my interests while creating new kinds of tech that might not exist just yet.

4. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

One thing is that I also love watching shows about the Tudor period. The popularity of shows like The Tudors means that I’m not alone in that. 😊 Even though I’ve seen many movies and shows, I always watch when a new one comes out.

5. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

At the moment my plans are to continue with the Worlds of Fire series, which will cover different portal worlds. But I’ll also work on a couple of other books in other series I’ve published. There’s a lot to do but not as much time as I’d like to do it all.

6. If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?
7. If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your leading roles?

8. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?

I don’t belong to a formal group, though I do have author friends who I can call on for feedback. One of them is also an editor, which is always good! Another author I work with provides mentoring to other authors, and she’s been an enormous help. I think it’s impossible to get your work out there without having support and feedback that you can trust.

11. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

Usually, I do a very basic outline, then start writing. I’m a pantser and not a plotter, which means I’m not really one for outlines. But it does help to have some sort of framework so I can stay on track. When scenes come to me, I write them down. Then eventually I start putting things together.

14. Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?

My next project will expand the story I mentioned, Metamorphosis. It’s about a gargoyle shifter who is on one of the portal worlds. He meets a student at the university where he’s a professor. As it turns out he has to help her when an experiment goes wrong. There’s a love story (of course!) a mystery, and the portals will be part of this story as well. It will be coming out next spring.

16. Can you tell us a little about the black moment in your book?

The heroine, Avani has a confrontation with the villain, Sebastian, who is a member of a group known as the Alchemists. He wants information that Avani has, and he doesn’t care what he has to do to get her to reveal the secrets. She isn’t sure of herself just yet and doesn’t know if she can fight him. But if she doesn’t the community of shifters and vampires will be in danger. She has to dig deep to be able to stand against him until her friends and the hero, Derek, can find her. It’s a point where she feels alone and vulnerable.

18. Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to write a series.

I’m just starting this series and it’s manageable so far. However, a couple of years ago I worked on my Hathor Legacy series (which is sci-fi with romantic elements). It has three books and by the second book I realized that I had to find ways to keep track of everything. The challenge was to make sure that characters, locations, descriptions, and the like were consistent throughout. On the plus side, the hero and heroine’s relationship developed as the story did, so that was fun to write. I could show how they were growing individually and as a couple as they went through different situations.

BLURB:

Out of the ashes, a new beginning…

When his family and most of their kind were destroyed by the Guild, Derek inherited the position of Vampire Lord. Alchemists held the keys to creating portals to other worlds, knowledge they passed down to phoenixes. Their utopian society was crushed when the Guild invaded, intending to unlock the powerful secrets phoenixes possess. Lovers Derek and Avani met the night their city was sacked and after the city succumbed, they were lost to each other.

Love will be resurrected in blood and fire…

Having lost her memory, Avani became a protégé of the Guild Master, conditioned by magic to believe shifters and vampires were evil. Eventually, she was made Seeker, tasked with finding the Vampire Lord in order to gain access to phoenixes.

When Derek finds Avani, he neutralizes the magic that’s kept her from remembering who she is. However, the Templars have almost certainly made a pact with the enemy of all supernatural creatures, in order to gain access to the portals. Only a phoenix can save the world from utter ruin now, but that was precisely the asking price…

EXCERPT:

“You’re thinking about the Guild, aren’t you? They don’t deserve your thoughts, or anything else.” Derek was standing next to the tub, undressing.

How had he known? Could he read my thoughts? Another thing I’d heard that vampires could do. As if in response the stabbing pain increased, like something within me was fighting to get out. Each stab cut deeper and deeper and I doubled over.

The water was shut off. I felt pressure on my back, moving me forward. Then splashing as Derek joined me in the tub. He sat and braced his legs on either side of me. He put his arms around me, holding on as I shivered.

His presence surrounded me like the water. A vampire. My enemy. A dangerous predator who I’d been taught to fear and hate.

Derek pulled my hair back and bared my neck. Soon he would sink his teeth into me to save me. Or he would have his revenge for what we’d done to his people. Maybe that had been his plan all along. I’d be less trouble dead.

In the cooling water, his touch melted me as he glided his tongue over my neck. The pain in my chest slowly subsided. Not gone but not dominant anymore. My body was becoming attuned to him. My gasps of pain lessening as my breathing matched his. In and out. In and out. Steady. Deliberate.

The Vampire Lord and the Seeker. Finally, together at last. But not in the way I’d always thought we’d be.
