I WANT TO HAVE THE HEART OF A DOG

REVIEW:

I Want to Have the Heart of a Dog by G. R. Gabriel

At first sight this book looks to be a recounting of the lives of Ms. Gabriel’s dogs or furbabies as she calls them. But the story is so much more.

If you have ever had a beloved pet you had to help across the rainbow bridge to the other side, you will want to read this story.

I’m truly at a loss as to how to describe this wonderful piece of nonfiction. While reading the story, I was able to look inside myself. I learned a bit about my true nature as I learned the story of the many dogs Ms. Gabriel has loved through this existence as well as other lifetimes.

While I read, I was struck with multiple questions I wanted to ask her, but realized ‘it was not my business’. I suppose this is good and bad but like any good book, I Want to Have the Heart of a Dog left me wondering about what comes next.

A kitty I’ve had for almost seventeen years needed to cross that rainbow bridge to the other side and having read Ms. Gabriel’s book helped me understand the process. Before my husband took her to the vet, I rubbed her head and spoke to her about the journey she was about to take, telling her not to be afraid because she would find happiness and healing where she was going.

I was further struck with astonishment when our vet sent a card to us after her passing. He too spoke of the rainbow bridge.

If you have pets you love, take the time to read this book. You will find many insights into yourselves and your life with your pets.

I rarely if ever give a book a five, but if I could rate this one higher, I would.

Blurb:
An intriguingly different look at one woman’s recovery from several lifetimes of abuse, betrayal and violent deaths–guided by dogs whose hearts contain the simple and miraculous knowledge of the Universe.

Excerpt:
Fur against my face and the soft smell of a dog curled protectively around me existed before my first memories of this life.

My mom used to tell stories of me as a toddler, sleeping with my head pillowed on our Collie’s belly. And of my brave furry protector forcing an uncle back into his car because I was outside without a parent. Never mind we lived out in the country where only relatives or nearby neighbors came to visit.

Tippy took his duties seriously, and executed them well. For ten years, he was a companion, a pillow, and a protector…

Though I didn’t realize it at the time, Tippy began my life-long love of dogs, and set the standard for all dogs who would follow in my life.

And those were not the last years Tippy and I would share…

From Tippy:
There will be much upheaval before your country finds a way to serve justice without becoming as savage as their challengers.

Being a peacemaker, you will tend to avoid these conflicts or discussion of them. Knowing there is a better way, but fighting your own demons and perceptions to reach that way. Yes, the war rages inside yourself between centuries of abuse, betrayal and atonement you set up to punish yourself and deny the true nature of your being. When you find love and forgiveness and a new way of living for yourself, then you will also see the dawning of a serene, peaceful abundance on the planet.

Yes, the planet truly is a reflection of what is in your heart. Yes, your emotions and intentions truly are powerful enough to change the world. When you love and respect yourself, you will see love and respect in the entire world. When you learn to play, the world plays with you. It can be difficult to change what seems like such a long time of wallowing in darkness and self-pity–yes, self-pity. An excuse not to become as glorious as you can be. To let that light shine; joining the glory of the Universe. To step out in power and courage. For many years in this lifetime, you will take baby steps, but there will come a time when you will leap and laugh and fly. Yes, you will fly, knowing the true lightness and rightness of who you are. Your physical body will not limit you.

And we will always be with you–your furry angels who you can love and trust unconditionally and feel safe with. And though you won’t put this together until well into this lifetime, Collies will carry a special message for you, as I do. You will feel drawn to them, and they will appear at critical times to guide and support you. But don’t overlook the other furries who appear in your life, for they also bring messages–
to hope, to play, to love, to look for the joy in this lifetime. For it is there, sometimes buried and forgotten in the angst of your self-punishment, but it is there.

Good-bye for now, my beloved. I will always be available to you and now entrust you to another set of paws to share your journey.

My bio:
Dogs have been my constant protectors, comforters and teachers, even when I didn’t realize the lessons they were trying to convey. After decades of living, a series of events brought me to the realization we are much more than one brief lifetime here on Earth–and so are our canine companions.
