INTERVIEW;
Christine, thank you so much for hosting me on the second stop of my blog tour for One Night in Minneapolis. It’s always so much fun to be at new blogs and get the chance to meet new readers. I hope everyone enjoys today’s Q&A, and don’t miss the chance to win a $15 Amazon gift card, too!
- What or who inspired you to start writing? I think I was born to write. Some people just have that particular talent. I was published in McCall’s magazine when I was in the fifth grade, and I’ve spent my entire career as an advertising and marketing communications writer. I’ve only been writing novels for seven years. One Night in Minneapolis is my twentieth book!
- How did you come up with ideas for your books? Sometimes it’s been a call from the publisher looking for stories in a particular series – One Night in Minneapolis is in the City Nights series – these novellas all occur within a 24-hour span in one city anywhere in the world. Other times, I might see a picture or conversation. Sometimes I just tell my brain to start working on a new idea.
- What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio? I really enjoy 4-wheeling. Driving through big puddles and muck are a blast. If you come home clean, you didn’t have ANY fun! Also, my day job is at a nuclear power plant. I work in station communications and spend most of my time shooting and producing video. It’s the craziest place to work with all the security but man, the technology and the people are awesome.
- As far as your writing goes, what are your plans? My day job is pretty demanding so it’s a struggle to be disciplined enough to get through all the administration an author has and still have time (and energy) to write. I wish I could say I write new words every single day. At best, I work on my newest project for a few hours a couple days a week and hit the administrative aspects every day. If I don’t, I’m overwhelmed.
- When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step? This is the craziest story, and I’ll keep it short. We had straightline winds come through our neighborhood and do a significant damage to our home. When the contractor arrived for estimates, he asked for my work phone number as a contact. At the time, I was working as a freelance magazine writer and editor and writing my first novel. As it turns out, this guy knew an author and agreed to pass on my name to Ms. Sherri Der-Willie. Sherri was kind enough to contact me and agreed to read a chapter from my debut novel, Awakening Allaire. She gave me a few tips about major writing issues I had (and there were many). I had a lot of work to do. Fiction writing is very complex. Anyway, when I finished the book, she referred me to a publisher and the rest is history.
- Do you outline your books or just start writing? Pantsers just start writing. I am more of a Plotter. I have to figure out my characters, get to know them, their careers, motivations and settings. I also identify major themes and conflicts and their resolution. Sometimes the book doesn’t go the way I planned but I need to have some kind of “word map” before I start.
- Do you have any hobbies and does the knowledge you’ve gained from these carry over into your characters or the plot of your books? You’ll find construction, engineering, police and military themes, settings and careers in several of my books. In fact, Marine Major Skylar Landis is an intelligence officer in One Night in Minneapolis. I’ve worked in these areas and have friends who do, so I have sometimes relied on that and them to build characters and their worlds.
- Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book? I’m not an author who has lots of projects started. I am generally working on two projects at a time. My WIP is in a genre I’ve never written before – historical – and not a romance. Having said that, my previous works that weren’t strong romances didn’t sell well. I guess that says I write what pleases me, and then hunt for a publisher that wants to give a voice to the story.
- Can you tell us a little about the black moment in your book? This was a two-year pause. I was within 5,000 words of being finished with One Night in Minneapolis when I had a significant life event. I wasn’t sure I’d come back to fiction writing but patience and my muse eventually won out. I completed this story in November 2016. I got the contract in January 2017.
- Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to write a series? I enjoy writing full novels and series are even better. I get the chance to know the characters well and build a really satisfying tale of their lives. I’ve also co-authored a series. That’s a bit more challenging. You must be on the same page about the story, it’s direction, your commitment and drive to write a seamless story otherwise you’re going to be battling each other. Readers shouldn’t be able to readily tell when one is taking over the pen if you’ve got duo authors.
Whew! I hope you have a question or two about what you just read because one lucky person is going to win a $15 Amazon gift card for their comment. I will be back to answer your questions later today!

BLURB:
Marine Major Skylar Landis doesn’t resemble the demure Catholic high school girl Vince Andersen once knew. They’d dated briefly until she patched things up with his nemesis, Ethan Standfeld. After school, she joined the Marines and they’d lost touch.
Their ten year class reunion in Minneapolis brings Skylar face-to-face with Vince, awakening her memories of the past. She asks him to plan a hot, no-strings-attached hook-up to sustain her sexual fantasies while her intelligence unit is deployed to the Middle East. As their adventure unfolds, and he gives her exactly what she needs, Skylar wonders whether she can forget the man who put her desires first and asked for nothing in return.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Skylar walked toward him, the picture of confidence and seduction in a black and
white sheath dress that clung to her curves. Her coppery-red hair rested on her right
shoulder.
Vince couldn’t wait to run his fingers through the thick, luxurious tresses and
over every inch of Ms. Landis.
She stood in front of him, a demure smile on her lips. “Vince. Finally.”
He took her hands, drawing her into an embrace. “Welcome home.”
“I can’t believe the day is finally here. We’re here.” Her voice held a gentle North
Carolina drawl she’d picked up after years living at the U.S. Marine Corps base
there.
When he kissed her cheek, citrus and spice scents grabbed his attention. He
whispered into her ear, “You look even more gorgeous than I imagined, and you
smell good enough to eat.”
“One can only hope.”
He winked at her. Though it had been ten years since they’d seen each other,
the intimate exchanges they’d had and the plans they’d made for this weekend
removed the usual dating preliminaries. He brushed the tip of his nose against hers.
Passion smoldered in her green eyes. She didn’t move from his embrace.
He kissed her lips softly, hoping to invoke the same desire unfurling in the pit of
his stomach. He noted a slowness in her breathing. Anticipation?
She brought her hand to the back of his head, and slowly moved her fingers in
the short hairs there.
Vince held her a little tighter. He teased her lips with the tip of his tongue, silently
inviting her to taste him. The sounds of shoppers quieted as only her soft moan
reached his ears. He kissed her with strengthening desire, but didn’t rush this first
time. Pent-up emotions made his body react like any red-blooded man’s would,
especially since she responded with equal passion. If he didn’t end the kiss soon,
anyone would be able to see the physical effect she’d had on him. Vince cupped her
cheek and gave her one more gentle kiss before stepping back.
He cleared his throat. “You’re lucky we’re in public.”
Welcome to my blog. I hope you have a great tour.
Thank you! It’s my pleasure to be here! Nice digs and it’s so nice to have people commenting along the way.
Do you live in Couer d’Alene? My aunt used to live there and I visited once. It was really a beautiful area.
Thank you for the chance to win. Great post!
You’re welcome. I hope you’ll enjoy the book, too, Kim!
Really great interview, thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Victoria.
Looks like a fun read. I hope that I win. Thanks for the giveaway. Bernie W BWallace1980(at)hotmail(d0t)com
I hope you enjoy the book, Bernie and thanks for stopping in.
Congrats on the new book and good luck on the book tour!
Thank you very much, Ally! It’s always exciting to have a new book out. It really never gets old.
I really enjoyed reading the excerpt, thank you!
Nikolina, I hope you also enjoy the book. Thanks for spending a few minutes with me.
Just stopping by to say hi! Hope you have a fabulous weekend!
Hi Ally, sorry for the delay. I had a very busy, long day. My favorite place to read – as a kid used to be my father’s chair. Today it’s on my garden swing, though I must admit I spend much more time weeding the gardens and writing than reading.
Thanks! You, too. Got any plans?
Where is your favorite spot to read?
How was your cinco de mayo? Did you do anything special?
Thanks for asking, Ally. It was beautifully sunny here for a change so my son and I took a sunset ride with our 4-wheelers. The sky was that perfect blend of pink and orange. We saw about 50 deer, a lot of rabbits a turkey and a SKUNK!
Squeeee! I love second chance romance! Congrats on the book and the tour. I’m really looking forward to reading your story!
My youngest sons are 4-wheeler and dirt bike enthusiasts but I’ve never had the pleasure. I’ve been a passenger on a moped a few times and that was a blast…except for the swallowing bugs part. Lol
Hi Bea – I’m big on second chances myself! I hope you enjoy the book and please leave a review. Ask your sons to take you for a 4-wheeler ride. It’s a chance to be a kid again – splash through the mud puddles and get dirty. I always say, “If you didn’t get muddy, you didn’t have fun!”
Will do! As an author myself, I always leave reviews!
Wishing you and yours a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!
I hope you’re enjoying your weekend. It’s always busy, isn’t it?
