INTERVIEW:

What or who inspired you to start writing?

I have always written as a sort of release. Whenever I was feeling too much or bursting with ideas, the only way to get rid of them was to write them down. Otherwise, my mind is too full and my emotions are too taut.

How did you come up with ideas for your books?

What expertise did you bring to your writing?

My ideas come from all over. Sometimes they’re from a dream, and sometimes they’re from something I heard or saw. Mostly, I ask myself a question that I want to explore. What would happen if this type of person were in this type of situation? As far as expertise, I don’t really believe in the word “expert.” To me, if I say I’m an expert, it implies I have nothing left to learn. And I always want to be open to learning something new. I will say that every experience I’ve ever had has affected my writing.

As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

To keep writing! There’s nothing like that feeling of stretching in my computer chair and saying, “ah, done!” Oh, the feeling of accomplishment!

If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?

Haha that’s a tough one. I’m pretty mean to my characters. I put them in rough situations and give them horrible backstories. I would probably want to be a crewmember on the airship Ember gets a job on in The Exiled Otherkin. It would be fun to travel around the world on an airship.

When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

After I finished Conjuring Zephyr. I really liked it, so I thought maybe others would like it too.

What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)

The best advice I’ve ever received regarding writing is to write the story I want to read that no one has written yet. The worst advice I’ve ever gotten was that if you’re good at grammar and punctuation, you don’t need an editor. Luckily, I knew that was just completely false.

Do you outline your books or just start writing?

It depends on the story. I need a vague idea of where the story is going and a clear image of my characters’ personalities before I can start. I like to just start writing, but sometimes that isn’t viable. When I was working on my detective story, I had to plot out every scene. It was exhausting.

Do you have any hobbies and does the knowledge you’ve gained from these carry over into your characters or the plot of your books?

I have so many things I am interested in! And everything I experience influences my writing. I read a lot about real magic. So even if I write fantasy, I try to make what I can as accurate as possible. As for The Exiled Otherkin, I’m really into steampunk. So my knowledge and enthusiasm for the genre are definitely reflected in the story.

Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?

I am usually two stories ahead of what’s being published. So what I’m working on now isn’t what readers will see next. I like to let a story sit for at least six months before I do a final read-through. I will say that I’m researching for a story set in Alberta during western expansion. Let’s just say, there will be Mounties and magic. As for what readers will see next, it’s called Intended Bondmates:

Runa has long given up on being content with her life. Her only goal is to protect Mikhail until he awakens and gains his full magic. For the last thirteen years, ever since tragedy struck when they were children, she has protected him as was expected of his werewolf guardian. Though she has started looking for a mate, she can’t imagine what will happen once she’s free of Mikhail. But when he requests to be unbound from her before his awakening, she’s given the chance to return to her intended bondmate.

She expects a warm welcome from Konner, not foreseeing his bitterness at having been abandoned. Konner isn’t the only one who is bitter. His brother’s guardian, Rowan, has had to protect both faelings while she was with Mikhail.

It’s up to Runa to find a way to soothe these two demanding males if she hopes to make up for her past betrayals.

Can you tell us a little about the black moment in your book?

Oooo, that may be giving stuff away. I will say, there will be hostages, and nothing goes according to plan.

EXCERPT:

Men and women dashed around the room, gleaming with sweat and smudged with black smears. The fires burned low. A large furnace at the center of the room had a thick chimney leading from it into the ceiling. Some people were moving piles of what looked like coal, while others tended a huge machine. It consisted of a number of large metal coils attached to gears. Some of the coils were wound tight while others were loose. The gears attached to the coils were meshed with gears that had magnets on them. Ropes, made of a material I couldn’t identify, were threaded through the center of the magnet gears.

We passed through engineering and climbed to the main deck. The wooden deck sprawled before us. The chimney from engineering came up through the floor and reached toward the cloth bubble above us.

Shy pointed to a cabin on the left. “That’s where you’ll bunk with the rest of the deckhands, Ember. I still have inventory to do. I trust you both can get settled?” He disappeared below deck.

I walked toward the cabin, and Reilley followed.

“I wish we were bunking together, Ember,” he said, slumping his shoulders. I didn’t respond and entered the cabin, shutting the door in his face.
