Sighing, Irewen snuggled deeper into the soft folds of her wool cloak. Pulling it tighter against her chest, she groaned. It didn’t do anything to keep out the bitter cold. Nothing did. Even the small fire she’d built when she stopped to make camp for the night barely eased her shivering.

And her situation wasn’t about to improve any time soon. She’d been traveling for four days and was nowhere close to reaching Lündvelle. With more than three weeks yet to go before entering the northern country of the Light Elves, and then at least another week until arriving at the city of Lilendvelle, the cold was the least of her worries.

She was alone. And she was being hunted.

A shiver ravaged her body, but it had nothing to do with the cold. She was afraid. No matter how many times she mulled over her last conversation with Laegon, she couldn’t bring herself to believe what he’d said, particularly regarding her role. Not completely. Not when considering the Drulaack. Not when knowing her cousin would stop at nothing to see her dead.

She understood Laegon’s points about female fighters. Yes, women who had the talent, skill, and determination could be exceptional fighters. Yes, the prince’s arguments for why women had the potential to be better warriors than men made sense. But Laegon had been speaking of regular foes. Not against the Drulaack—men possessing the nearly unmatched strength of the dead.

Her mind drifted back to the time at Dremond’s Cave when Laegon had battled four of the Drulaack. He’d had the benefit of added strength from Brégen, Silevethiel, and Drell as well as his Sight and over two hundred years of intense training and experience. And still, the fight hadn’t been easy.

Irewen didn’t have such luxuries. With Silevethiel ordered by the Elven Council to stay in Silverden and only a few weeks of weapons’ training, the only benefit she had outside of her confusing and unpredictable abilities was luck.

And luck wouldn’t be enough.
