INTERVIEW

  1. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

I used to be a college English teacher, so publishing was part of my job. But publishing fiction was a huge step for me. I think the most important influence I had was the support from the San Antonio Romance Authors, the local RWA chapter. We were all writing together and sharing our successes and failures. Knowing we were all in this thing together gave me the courage to send my MSS off to publishers. And finally one of them came through!

  1. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?

I don’t belong to a group, but I do have a critique partner. She’s been a tremendous help getting me to see what works and doesn’t work in my writing. Nobody should send off a manuscript that hasn’t been read by at least one other person.

  1. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

I’m a plotter. I feel like I have to have a road map before I start traveling or I might not get to the right place. Now having a map doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll follow it no matter what. I take detours and I meander off the path from time to time. But I always know where I’m going. For me, that’s really reassuring.

  1. Do you have any hobbies and does the knowledge you’ve gained from these carry over into your characters or the plot of your books?

I live in Colorado where almost everybody gets outdoors some of the time. I’ve hiked or snowshoed in a lot of the places my characters hike and I’ve seen the scenery they see. I’ve also worked some of my other hobbies like cooking into other books, but it’s the outdoors part of my life that’s had the biggest effect on the Folk series.

  1. Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to write a series.

Series are a lot of fun to write because they allow you to create more complex characters and stories. You can introduce a character in one book and let the readers know a little bit about her, just enough to make them intrigued, knowing that you can go into greater detail in the next book or another book farther down the line. Series also allow you to expand the world you’re creating, adding more detail and richness. Of course, you also have to remember the details you dropped in the previous books so you can keep things consistent. Series aren’t always easy, but they’re always fun.

  1. If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?

I enjoy all the characters from the Folk series, but I’d really love being Prince Bertie. He’s the character who knows the most and who’s consistently in control. Of course, in Found, the book that follows Unseen,Bertie’s the hero and you discover that he’s not always as suave as he seems, but he’s still a lovely character to write.

  1. If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your leading roles?

I actually play around with casting for most of my books when I create Pinterest boards for them. If you visit my Pinterest page, https://www.pinterest.com/megbenjamin/, you’ll find that I think Chris Pine or Theo James would do well as Teran. For Marika, either Shailene Woodley or Emily Mortimer would work. I love the idea of Tom Hiddleston as Prince Bertie, but lately I’ve also begun to think Matthew Goode would do the role well. For Eva, the petite blonde, Michelle Williams would do or Emily de Raven. Reynard is tough, but Diego Luna could do it. And Aunt Goody? Why not Glen Close?

  1. Do you have an all time favorite book?

Probably Loretta Chase’s Lord of Scoundrels. It has just the right blend of romance, humor and heartbreak.

  1. Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?

The third book in the Folk series, Found, will come out in March 2019. It picks up where Unseenends, using a lot of the same characters.I hope readers of Unseenwill be left wondering what happens to a couple of the people they meet—Found will take care of the questions.

  1. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

I’d like to go on with the Folk, and I have some ideas for future books, both contemporary and paranormal. Stay tuned, y’all!

BLURB:

Teran Richter is in Animas, Colorado, to find members of the Folk, a simple task. But the annual Animas Fall Festival brings hordes of tourists and daily celebrations that make it frustrating. Things begin to look up when Teran meets Marika Sager. Marika’s business partner Eva seems to be a member of the Folk, only it’s Marika Teran’s attracted to, particularly after a local witch’s brew sends the two into a memorable night of passion.

But there are sinister forces at work in Animas. Teran’s attacked and his assistant is kidnapped. When Marika also disappears, Teran’s forced to confront the truth: someone is out to sabotage his mission and destroy anyone who tries to help. With an eccentric team of magical allies, Teran must rescue Marika and fight off those who want to destroy both him and the Folk. But can he find a way to confront the shadowy forces while keeping himself and his lover safe from harm?

EXCERPT:

The flash of heat zapped along Teran’s backbone, branching out into the nerves along his shoulders, then into his arms. He jerked with the force of it, and the heat ripped to his sides and out. The fog glowed red as his power crashed into it.

It thinned before it gathered once again.

They pushed forward quickly, but not quickly enough.

“Can you increase the voltage?” Reynard muttered.

“If I knew what I was doing, I might be able to. Since I’m playing it by ear, I don’t know. I’ll try once more.” He took a deep breath, then concentrated. This time the power snaked through his body more quickly—he felt it all the way to the back of his head. For a moment he felt as if he were glowing, and then the blast flew outward into the mist.

And shot back toward them.

“Holy crap,” Reynard cried, throwing himself flat on the ground.

Teran had time to hunch over, protecting his head. The power blast washed over him like a superheated wave. It felt like he’d singed his hair.

Terrific. What the hell kind of Seelie singes his own goddamn hair with his own goddamn power blast? A reluctant Seelie, obviously.
