Is writing an art?
First, let me say I don’t have an MFA. I don’t even have a degree in English or Literature. My degree is in Information Systems. I know, boring right? So my opinion on writing being an art is only that, my opinion.
When I write, I plot first, define each scene with the conflict and goal. This doesn’t sound very artistic does it. But let’s think about it in terms of painters. There are various schools of art, realism, modern, impressionism or abstract, just to name a few. Each artist is unique and creative but most likely they will subscribe to one of these styles. They may do sketches before they begin. They may even start and revise several times.
Just because they are planning, following a specific style does it make it any less of an art? I don’t think so and my guess is most people reading this would agree. Writing is exactly the same. So what if an author follows a classic three act structure? That’s what makes the work recognizable as a novel. Just like painting styles, each genre of writing has a style that makes it unique and identifiable. Without that, it would be senseless words on a page.
So where does the art come in? That’s the creation of the words, the crafting of the story. It’s the act of keeping the reader turning page after page to get to the end. It’s the creation of the idea that the author turns into a story. It’s the creation of characters that the readers care about and want to see succeed or fail.
So that leads to the question, is my writing art? Sure, but I’m not a Devinci or Monet. There are only a few of those types of artists in history. In writing I think of Hemmingway, Shakespeare and Dickens. People that have left a mark on humanity. Do I ever expect high school students to study my work? No, but that’s not why I’m creating my art. I’m creating something to allow people to step outside of their everyday lives for a break. Something to think about, but not hurt their brains. I want them to understand, not question what the deeper meaning is. Sure there’s subtext and if you want to think deeper about my work, I like to think you can, but it’s unnecessary. It’s about enjoying it for what it is.
So is writing art? Most definitely. Sure there are structures that should generally be followed or the observer won’t enjoy it. But most definitely the crafting of a story that grabs a reader’s attention is art.

EXCERPT:
Nicolas walked back to the door. He turned and said, “This is a mistake. Mark my words.”
Erin watched him go, then sank to the bottom step of the grand stairway. Her head fell into her hands. This wasn’t the last she’d hear of the High Priestess. More messengers would come. Maybe they wouldn’t ask politely. Maybe they would try to force her. Maybe it would just be more groveling fools like Nicolas. Whatever happened, she wouldn’t give in to them. She wandered back up the stairs into her bedroom. The room she never slept in. It was her retreat though. She picked up the picture of her and Gerry again. He was so happy, and so was she. She saw it in both of their eyes. Honest and genuine happiness. Something she lost. It had been a year since things fell apart. It still felt like the first night alone.
She set the picture down and flopped on the bed. She lay back and tried to forget. But she couldn’t. It was still too real, too raw. Tears rose again and slid down her face. They were lost in her hair, and she stared at the ceiling. There was nothing she could do about her past decisions.
The only way to go was forward. Unfortunately, it would be a painful path.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:
I love a good paranormal read, something about the un-dead haunts the fringes of my mind. Mix in romance, love, loss, and you have a great story.
I voraciously read everything, fiction, and non-fiction but always find myself turning back to the darker stories. I’ve always wanted to write and the dream became a reality with Capital Thirst, and the remainder of the Erin Kingsly novels.
I spend most of my days designing and building websites, but my free time is devoted to my wife, family, and cats. Yes three grown children and three cats. Things can be hectic.
For fun you might find me driving winding roads with the top down or out photographing nature.
