“They have very good eyesight,” said the guide, “so we must stay in good concealment. We are still downwind, but we should shift over about fifty metres to get a good angle to shoot.”

Hans carefully and slowly lifted his rifle, and before crawling after the guide, he checked that his safety was on. Arriving at the shooting site, he settled in quietly and prepared himself. From this vantage point the bull was fully exposed, down range about 350 metres. He looked through the scope, and the huge beast was right there. A perfect set. Hans had to check his heart rate and breathing. He didn’t want to blow this. In his former life, he never would have thought of hunting animals for sport. He was too busy hunting humans. But this moment, this experience, was primeval. Man vs. Prey. Not quite “kill or be killed,” he supposed, but a wounded water buffalo was not to be underestimated, or so his guide had explained a few days ago. He settled and then pulled the trigger slowly, as he had been shown. He was concentrating so hard that the shot, when it came, almost surprised him.

“A perfect shot, Senor!” the guide gushed. “You have him right in the heart, just like I showed you. Oh, very good, Senor!”
