EXCERPT:

After completing his examination, the surgeon turned to Bill and said, “It is not a serious injury. I will stitch him up soon, and in about a month, he will be as good as new. I want to assure you, Bill, that this is nothing serious, and Richard should gain full function of his hand soon.”

“Richard is a violinist. Can he continue to play violin?” Cathy asked.

The surgeon became grim, thought for a moment, and replied, “I hope so, but I am not sure. He may lose some very fine functions of the hand, but other than that, he will be as good as before.”

One of the officers quietly motioned to one of the individuals who came with Bill to step aside and explained that the two guys who did this were Ramsey and Mika. The guy approached Bill and whispered in his ear. Phil noticed these secretive conversations.

Mike was sitting in the emergency section with his mother, who came to the hospital after Mike called her. When the surgeon told Richard’s mom that he might not play violin as well as before, Cathy started blaming Mike and asked him why they went to that part of the city. Richard explained that it was his idea and not Mike’s fault. One police constable said to Cathy, Phil, and everyone present that Richard and Mike were lucky to be alive.

“They could just as easily be dead. I am surprised the thugs left without inflicting more serious harm.”

Bill pretended that he didn’t know the officer, but he nodded to him as a sign for a job well done. The police asked Richard and Mike to go to the police station the next day to look through mug shots to see if they could recognize their assailants. Flore raised the concern that the thugs may come after Richard and Mike. Cathy and Phil realized that she had a point and were worried. Bill assured them that he would make sure they were not in trouble and explained that he was confident the police would not let any harm come to either of them.

The medical staff took Richard for surgery. After a while, the surgeon came out and informed them the surgery was a success, and as he had said earlier, he expected a full recovery.

The next day, Pedro, one of Antonio Donatelli’s employees, who was working for Bill as a consultant, was sitting in a coffee shop with Ramsey and Mika. He explained that one of the guys in yesterday’s stabbing was his boss’s nephew and warned them that they were off-limits.
