Groaning again, Justin rose from bed. Wrapping the sheet around his waist, he trudged to the door, the wooden floor cold against his bare feet.

He opened the door and the woman stared up at him through her thick glasses. Her eyes were bloodshot and she reeked of beer and cigarette smoke — so unlike the arousing scent of Anna’s smoke.

“Yes?” Justin said.

“You have to go. Here’s your money back.” The woman held out the bills. “It’s all there. I’m not even charging you for yesterday.”

“Why? What have I done?”

“Nothing.”

“There must be a reason.”

“Listen, I don’t own the building, okay? Believe me, you’re luckier than you know to be leaving. So just pack up and get out.”

“Who owns the place? Is it Anna?”

The woman stared at him, a hint of surprise in her eyes. “You know her name?”

“She told me.”

Her lips twisted into an almost obscene smile. “No kidding. I guess it’s just like I thought after all.”

“What do you mean?”

“Nothing. I’ve said too much already.” She turned to leave, but Justin grasped her arm.

“Wait a moment. Tell me about her.”

“About Anna? Not on your life, handsome, or should I say not on my life.”

“Now that just piques my curiosity even more.”

“Too bad.”

Justin held the woman’s gaze. “Tell me about Anna.”

The woman’s eyes clouded. Few could resist Justin’s will.
