INTERVIEW:
- What or who inspired you to start writing?
I think I’ve always had a bit of a writing bug. As a kid I used to think of new episodes to my favorite sitcoms. That grew into writing some fanfiction in college. After I graduated I thought, “Hey, I should try and write a novel!” I took my favorite fanfiction story and altered it away from the fan, writing my first story. And once I did that, I was hooked!
- What expertise did you bring to your writing?
I write about characters who have a hearing loss, partly because I have a hearing loss myself! On top of being hard of hearing since birth, I also have a degree in Deaf Studies from Boston University, and am fluent in ASL (American Sign Language). I love bringing this part of myself onto the page. For A Perfect Mistake I also have my main character as a social worker. I worked in social work for ten years, in Nica’s job as a case manager in elder services for seven of those years. So there’s a lot of my own life put into this story.
- As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
My future plans are to keep writing! I’ve got three romcoms under contract, the first coming out spring of 2020. I also have plans to turn A Perfect Mistake into a series. Beyond that, I want to keep writing main characters with a hearing loss, to show we are deserving of love and HEA, and to hopefully spread some awareness.
- Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?
Not a specific group, per say, but I’ve got a lot of writers that are my go to’s for critiques, including a group that have become close friends. We bounce ideas off each other, and I turn to them when I’m pulling out my hair! I think every writer needs a community, needs people to lean on. Some days I need someone to tell me a concept isn’t working, other days I need someone to remind me my ideas aren’t crap!
- When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?
I wrote my first novel on my own, without any outside support for years. It some ways it allowed me to develop my voice, but I didn’t truly start growing as a writer until I found others to learn from. It was only after meeting a group through the former Amazon Breakthrough Awards that I felt ready to take my passion and make it a reality.
- What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)
Best: Get critique partners! Seriously, I wouldn’t be where I am without my group ripping apart my words and helping me grow my craft. Worst: Read your books out loud. As someone with a hearing loss, this doesn’t help me and I wish more authors would realize that while it may be a good advice to some, it’s not for everyone.
- Do you outline your books or just start writing?
I’ve been a pantser, aka just start writing, from the start, letting my stories unfold as I get the scenes on the page. But publishing requires a certain amount of story planning, so I now consider myself a bit of combo. I don’t outline, that’s never been my thing, but I will throw together a general story idea in my former ways and then see how the story grows and changes as I write.
- Do you have an all time favorite book?
Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie. It was one of the few books I read during a reading drought and when I need the ultimate comfort book I still reach for it.
- Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?
My next book will be published spring of 2020. MATZAH BALL SURPRISE involves a fake date for Passover, only my hero is Deaf and my female doesn’t know ASL!
- Can you tell us a little about the black moment in your book?
The black moment occurs as my heroine, Nica’s, job is on the line. She’s stressed, as can be imagined, but when it’s revealed she kept some information hidden from hero Cam, they end up in a fight. Only they still need to work together to save her job.
- What is your favorite reality show?
I don’t watch a lot of reality TV, but I do enjoy House Hunters and put that on when I need a short break from everything.
Thank you so much for having me!
BLURB:
Falling for the forbidden has never felt so right…
When social worker Nica Anders indulges in one night of sexual passion with delicious Deaf man Cam Thompson, the last thing she expects is to see him the next day while visiting her dying client. He’s Cassie’s grandson and caregiver, the one treat she shouldn’t have tasted. Now her job is on the line, demanding she stay away.
But their attraction is building like a raging inferno and Nica can’t help but get burned.
Cam Thompson’s life is a mess. He’s losing his grandmother, the one person who’s supported him his whole life, and her dying wish is for him to settle down with a good woman—specifically her social worker Nica Anders. Despite Nica trying to hold tight to her ethics, he’s falling for her hard and fast.
Yet Cam’s grandmother isn’t the only matchmaker in his family, and someone’s determined to keep him and Nica apart.
Steamy, touching, heart-warming. A much-needed #OwnVoices romance to go perfectly with that plate of chocolate brownies and glass of wine!

EXCERPT:
I needed to get laid. At least, that’s what my amber cocktail made me think—correction, my third amber cocktail. If the first two hadn’t murdered my inhibition, the third managed to land the final blow.
Minus my usual filter, my eyes wandered around the room, hunting for a man to prey on. The bar was packed for a Tuesday night. Waves of chatter encompassed me, creating a low hum in my ears. But I didn’t care about the noise, not when a particular delicious specimen held me captivated, with hair the hue of rich caramel sticking out in different directions. He sat at the bar, hunched over his drink. A brunette with boobs practically spilling out of her top tried to speak to him, but he shook his head and tapped in front of his ear twice, before turning back to his drink.
She may have slinked back to her friend, but I bit my lip, taming down the grin threatening to split my face. Perfect. My fingers itched to communicate, or smooth down his messy hair.
Perhaps both.
Before I could make up my mind, his broad shoulders stiffened and he turned. My alcohol-induced bravado vanished, and I tried to wrench my gaze away. Except, I didn’t move. Not an inch. Total disconnect from cranial activity to body movement. Damn fruity drinks. A pair of brown eyes locked with mine. Crap. I knew better than to be rude and stare.
Quick, sign something, I willed my hands, anything.
