INTERVIEW:
- How did you come up with ideas for your books?
I had written the Fangs and Fists series that is set in a futuristic world in which demons have taken over Earth. I wanted to write about what happened leading up to that. I also wanted to write about magic and soulmates. That’s how Wild Witches of Beaver Bay came about.
- As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
Currently, I’m working on Amelia and Orion, the last book in the Wild Witches of Beaver Bay series. Amelia and Orion have appeared in other books in the series. They’ve had a very long and somewhat explosive friendship, but they’re ready to take it to the next level. After Amelia and Orion, I’m writing the last book in the Fangs and Fists series, and then moving on to a third series that will tie together and conclude both Fangs and Fists and Wild Witches of Beaver Bay.
- When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?
I started submitting my work when I was about sixteen, but it took ten years for me to finally receive an acceptance. It was for a short, erotic vampire story. My family and friends have always been supportive of my writing.
- Do you outline your books or just start writing?
I prefer to work with a loose outline. I like to know how the story starts, how it ends, and several major points in the middle. It’s also important that I have wiggle room, because no matter how well I plan a story, changes always happen.
- Do you have any hobbies and does the knowledge you’ve gained from these carry over into your characters or the plot of your books?
Definitely. I love to work out and in the past I’ve taken certain types of classes to help with research. When I was younger, I was very much into martial arts (Shotokan and kick boxing). I still practice, but nowadays it’s incorporated with my other workouts. A few years back, I tried Jiu Jitsu to help research a book. I didn’t stick with it, but it was a rewarding experience and offered insight that I wouldn’t have had for certain characters. I also took belly dancing classes for a couple of years and that was useful for writing characters who are belly dancers. I’ve taken up hula hooping, so don’t be surprised if I write a character or two who hoop.
- Do you have an all time favorite book?
That’s a hard question. Off the top of my head I would say it’s a tie between The Phantom of the Opera and The Three Musketeers.
- Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?
Yes! Right now I’m working on Amelia and Orion, the last book in the Wild Witches of Beaver Bay series. Amelia has known Orion since college. They’re good friends who argue a lot, but as Amelia said to Mysti, to know Orion is to argue with him. He’s cranky and intense, but he has a lot of integrity for a half-demon, half-human/vampire. He also has a connection to one of the worst villains in the Fangs and Fists series. Amelia and Starr are probably the only ones who truly understand him. As far as writing goes, Orion is definitely one of my problem children, but he’ll be worth it.
- Can you tell us a little about the black moment in your book?
Even though this is a story about demons, there’s a lot of hope in it. The closest to a black moment in the story is probably when Starr goes into a portal to “hell” to fight demons who are trying to invade Earth. Mysti stays behind to help injured demon hunters. It’s her first time experiencing this and she is worried that Starr won’t return.
- Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to write a series.
I love to write series books. While I sometimes write standalones, it’s truly satisfying to keep up with characters throughout several books. Keeping details consistent is probably the most difficult thing about writing a series, but the pleasures of writing one far outweigh the problems.
- Anything else you might want to add?
I love to connect with readers. I have a new newsletter in which I share excerpts and other info. If you would like details, please stop by my website https://www.kate-hill.com. Thank you very much!

EXCERPT:
Starr slipped and tumbled down a rocky, leaf-strewn decline. For several seconds he could only grunt and try to roll with the fall. He landed on his stomach, the wind momentarily knocked out of him. He tasted blood and spat a mouthful while pushing himself to his hands and knees. From what he could tell, he had cuts and bruises, but no breaks.
Blinded by rain and wind, he glanced around, dazed. He started climbing up the slippery incline, but fell again. Maybe it was an optical illusion, but he thought a path led off to his left. Starr tried to calm his mind and listen for guidance. Instinct told him to try the path, illusion or not, and he had long ago learned to listen to his instincts.
He took a step and his ankle nearly buckled.
Great.
He pushed forward as quickly and carefully as he could with a sprained ankle.
Something too warm for rain trickled down the back of his neck. He swiped it and looked at his bloodstained hand. Rain pelted it, diluting the blood. Dragging his hand along his denim-clad thigh, he limped on.
Squinting through the storm, he noticed a clearing in the distance, surrounding a lake or bay.
“Hey!”
That wasn’t a spirit voice, but human.
“Hey, you! Dude!”
Starr turned and saw a woman approaching. She wore a yellow fisherman-style raincoat and hat that left half her face in shadow.
She approached and Starr hobbled toward her.
“Hi,” he said. When she tilted her amber gaze to his, Starr’s heart skipped a beat.
He smiled faintly.
So she’s why I’m here.
