Personal Transformation From The Inside Out

INTERVIEW:
What or who inspired you to start writing?
A few years after I became a coach, we moved to a small town in the desert. A local newspaper interviewed me, as they do all new businesses that come to the area, and at the end of the interview the Editor of the paper asked if I would write a weekly column on Coaching. I said yes and was very fortunate to have her edit my work and teach me the trade of writing for a newspaper. I went on to write business profile articles for the paper, as well.
That got my writing started and, in 2005, I wrote a book, Leadership On Trial: Lessons from The Apprentice about the first season of Donald Trump’s reality show. Little did I know then what he would be doing this year!
How did you come up with ideas for your books?
For Chrysalis, I began thinking about the parallels between personal transformation and the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. As I coached clients, I started using the analogy often. Then my muses got active encouraging me to write a book. At first I resisted, as I had a lot of things I wanted to do for my business. Soon I gave in J and started writing. Once I did, the book flowed.
For Power Stories: Mythical Tales of Personal Power at work, I had made a commitment to write 2 hours a day. I wrote 3 chapters of a nonfiction book and a proposal and started sending out to agents. There was nothing more to do at that time, but I wanted to keep my commitment to write. One day during my writing time, I put my head down on my desk and then the inspiration for Power Stories came to me!
For Leadership on Trial: Lessons from The Apprentice, When I viewed The Apprentice on TV I thought there were many valuable lessons on leadership provided by the show that could help people in their careers. However, I wasn’t sure if the people watching the show were my audience for a book. One weekend, I went to northern California to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The Sunday morning after the party I went to brunch with some people and mentioned I was considering writing the book. All of them were watching the show and encouraged me to write it. They were my audience and were very engaged in the first season of the show!
What expertise did you bring to your writing?
Particularly for my book Chrysalis, I bring experience in going through my own profound personal transformations. In addition, I have coached clients since 1996 through many personal transformations, sharing their experiences, challenges and triumphs.
What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?
I am passionate about helping to bring about positive change in the world.
As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
I have finished a new book, Kaleidoscope: Flying Together In Earth’s New Energy. It is a leap forward for me into writing more abstractly about energy and how our world is changing. I am excited to bring it out in the world.
I have just begun a new book Hummingbird and am excited to see where my writing takes me.
Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?
I do not belong to a critique group. I think critique groups have to be carefully formed so that they are both constructive and supportive. I do belong to a group of women writers here in the desert and have been with them for several years. We meet monthly for lunch and share stories, challenges, marketing approaches and the like. It is a great group!
What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)
The best advice was to use only necessary words to convey your meaning and not to use words you do not need.
The worst advice? To focus on volume over quality.
Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?
Kaleidooscope: Flying Together In Earth’s New Energy came to me as a force of nature as I was writing Chrysalis. Kaleidoscope looks at new energy that has arrived on earth. The book explores the nature of this new energy, how each of us can attune to it, what awaits us once we are in it, how humanity, collectively, can break through the firewall that now separates us from it, tools and pathways we can use to access it and what our world may look like in the future because of it.
As I was searching for a title for the book, I was excited to learn that Kalidoscope is a scientific name for a group of butterflies. It’s a perfect continuation of my book Chrysalis!
Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to write a series.
When I wrote Chrysalis, I did not intend to write a series, but think I have a nonfiction series now. As I mentioned earlier, my next book is titled Kaleidoscope (a name for a group of butterflies) and expands on the concepts in Chapter 5 of Chrysalis that is titled Our Collective Chrysalis. The book I just started, Hummingbird again uses nature to guide us as we evolve.
Anything else you might want to add?
Thanks Christine and Goddess Fish Promotions, for making this blog tour stop possible. And, special thanks to those of you reading this interview. I hope you enjoy Chrysalis and wish you many happy transformations!
BLURB:
We are living in a time of transformation. Old ways are fading. New ways are emerging. There is an increasing focus within. Many of us are feeling a desire to create a new direction for our lives.
Chrysalis: Personal Transformation From The Inside Out uses nature’s process of Chrysalis- a caterpillar transforming to a butterfly – as a guide for our own personal transformation. Each stage of Chrysalis provides a jumping-off point, upon which to reflect about our own experiences as we each transform.

EXCERPT:
Chapter Three
Growth and Struggle
Starting With Yourself
In your own Chrysalis, you start from where you are, developed and conditioned by the outside world. Who would think a caterpillar’s tissues would create a butterfly? It is a beginning for you, different from anything that has gone before.
—
Great Destruction Brings Rebirth
There are other examples in nature of great destruction bringing rebirth—volcanoes pushing rich new soil to the surface, small earthquakes releasing pressure on a fault line and weathering and erosion creating new land forms.
In your Chrysalis, effort is well spent in balancing the destructive and creative forces occurring in your life. It is a time of some chaos. Your point of gravity is shaken, and stability is not yet regained. Enduring your Chrysalis involves maintaining balance between creation and destruction through discipline and developing habits that support you through this time. As parts of your life crumble, you may need more nurturing. As the new enters your life, you may need to give yourself some time to acclimate.
As you endure creation and destruction or face uncertainty in your life, know that rebirth awaits you.
—
Why Change?
Wasn’t the caterpillar beautiful enough?
Yes, it was.
Its new opportunity, as a butterfly,
Lies in its wings—to fly.
—
Try this:
Think of a time in your life when you were scared, but you kept going.
What gave you the strength and courage to proceed? (You can use that again.)
What would have happened if you did not proceed?
How would your life be now?
