GENRE: Romantic Suspense

BLURB:

Ever since a devastating family tragedy seventeen years ago, Grace Bighill has struggled to keep her remaining family from falling apart. Then the discovery of her mother’s body in the woods unearths a connection to a decades old murder case, and Grace is dragged into a politician’s bitter bid for revenge.

Constable Mike Davenport’s days in Aspen Lake are numbered. He’s ready to take his next step up the career ladder somewhere a lot more cosmopolitan. He’s avoided any emotional attachments, despite having fallen hard for a certain stubborn local. But when a body turns up, Mike’s careful intentions collapse in the face of Grace’s grief and her exhaustive efforts to care for her family.

A search for answers leads Grace and Mike down a twisted path proving no one can escape their roots. But someone might die trying.

EXCERPTS:

“Stupid fuel pump,” she muttered.

Nancy sighed. “Just go with the nice police officer.”

“Sheesh. I’m going.” She pulled the hoodie close and stubbornly got to her feet unassisted.

“That’s the spirit.” Nancy winked in his direction. “There are worse things.”

To lighten the mood, Mike winked back.

Grace rolled her eyes. “We can go out the backdoor. I’ll grab my things on the way.”

“Grace.” Wayne paused in his mission to re-right chairs. “You’re officially off the schedule tomorrow. Paid leave.”

She all but stomped a foot. “I’m not dying.”

“I can see that.” He bent, picked up another chair, set it down. “Still don’t want to see you in here tomorrow.”

“Fine. Thanks.” She wrapped her arms around her middle, her voice dropping to a frustrated whisper. “For nothing.”

Mike caught the defeat in her voice. It was so unlike her he forgot himself and tucked a few dark strands of loose hair behind her ear. She flinched, and he dropped his hand. “He’s worried about you.”

“Sorry. It hurts.” She laid a gentle hand over her cheek. “And it’s making me feel like a wimp.”

God, he wanted to kiss it all better. So badly. He ached with holding back, but further contact was a terrible idea. To distract them both, he opened the Staff Only door for her. “I’ll wait out here while you collect your things.”

A moment later, she limped out of the office toting a bulging bag with knitting needles poking out the top. She knit the craziest blankets, all kinds of colors with no rhyme or reason to them he could see. They resembled her life – busy, chaotic, and bright.

There was no room in his life for chaos. All of a sudden, he didn’t want to be alone with her. When he’d first arrived in Aspen Lake, those extraordinary eyes had invited more than friendship. But he hadn’t wanted to want her. He liked her. Admired her. But to crave her, too? The last time he’d felt those things for a woman, he’d lost a piece of his soul. And so much more.
