INTERVIEW:

  1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

Ever since I was a young girl, I’d make up stories in my head. Often times, I was told to stop daydreaming and pay attention. Yet the stories lived inside me—my mind was my playground. I used to keep diaries, which were filled with poems and daily happenings in my young life. In addition, I composed plays for my family and my siblings and we would perform them in front of our parents. They were usually plays centered around Christmas.

  1. How did you come up with ideas for your books?

My love affair with Scotland and Ireland began decades ago. I blame it on my own bloodline—a yearning to return to the land of my ancestors. It called out to me within the stories of Irish mythology and Scottish history. I’d close my eyes and pretend I was there. When I finally took my first trip to Scotland sixteen years ago, the birth of a series—the Dragon Knights were born. I was sitting on a boulder in the Highlands, surrounded by the magic and the mists of the land. However, on the second half of my trip, I visited Ireland. As I wandered the soft rolling hills in various shades of green, the land spoke to my soul and urged me to place the Dragon Knights here, too. It would be several more years before I decided on both countries—Scotland and Ireland as part of my stories. A perfect solution to a problem I had been debating on for the Dragon Knights.

3. What expertise did you bring to your writing?

Purely my imagination and love of Celtic mythology.

  1. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

I’m a huge fan of the TV series, Beauty and the Beastthat featured Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman.

  1. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

I had been writing this series since my first trip to Scotland in the summer of 2000. Yet it wasn’t until the closure of Borders Books where I worked that I decided to take a leap of faith and submit my first story. The only person who knew was my husband. He’s been my biggest supporter and my own knight in shining armor.

In addition, it was on our wedding anniversary that he gave me my first laptop. He encouraged me to write down my stories. He said, “It’s the most unromantic gift I’ve ever given you.” My reply, “It’s the most romanticgift ever, since you believe in me and my writing.”

  1. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

I definitely outline my books. It all begins with a leather journal and pen. All my research, plots, characters, and background settings are written into those journals. The journals become a “bible” of the story. I’m forever jotting down ideas and adding notes and/or pictures.

  1. Do you have any hobbies and does the knowledge you’ve gained from these carry over into your characters or the plot of your books?

Absolutely! My knowledge (hobby) of plants and gardening go into most of the plots and/or characters within my stories. I even took a class on medieval medicinal plants. When I visited the Orkney Islands two years ago, I was fortunate to have a personal guide. He was extremely knowledgeable about the plants and flowers which grew on the islands, and I wrote down everything.

  1. Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?

Yes. I’m working on the first book in a brand new series called, The Wolves of Clan Sutherland. I’ve returned home to medieval Scotland and the Orkney Islands. It’s a blend of Norse and Celtic mythology. These men are the elite guard for King William, “The Lion” of Scotland.

  1. What is your favorite reality show?

Top Chef! I love that reality cooking show. I’m always in awe of how a person can create a dish off the top of their brain so quickly. I’m methodical and take my time with a recipe. Besides, the show highlights some of wonderful cities here in the U.S. and throughout the world.

  1. Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to write a series?

I’ve always enjoyed reading a series, so it only made sense for me to write one. For me as an author, I loved spending time with characters from previous books in the series. There were times when an issue I thought was resolved in the first book had surfaced once again in another story. The characters needed to say more. My series allowed for more depth and emotion. And I loved the sense of family with my series.

Thanks so much for hosting me and my new release, To Weave A Highland Tapestryon your blog!

EXCERPT:

His presence loomed from behind her. “If ye will permit me, I shall roll my knuckles along your back.”

Heat flared instantly up her neck, but Gwen nodded, giving him permission.

When the first contact of his fist swept across her back, Gwen let out a moan. Pain and pleasure fought for dominance. She closed her eyes against the sensation of his healing and seductive touch, allowing her body to ease from its rigid position.

“Let your limbs relax,” he urged.

“Feels so good,” she mumbled.

He splayed his fingers and massaged the knots along the column of her neck. Delicious pinpricks trickled down her back, along with the melting snow on her head. Gwen knew she presented a wretched sight, but she gave no care. His fingers caressed the top of her spine, and wove their way down to both shoulders. By the time he finished, her body was on fire with another type of ache, but her muscles had loosened up. There was no denying the man ignited a spark within her.

Gwen turned around slowly.

He placed his hand above her on the tree, trapping her against the rough bark with his body. Lowering his head near her ear, he whispered. “Better?”

The word had her breathing rapidly. Gwen did the unthinkable and pressed her cheek against him—his beard grazing her face. “Yes.”

“Good,” he breathed the word against her skin and withdrew.

He held her captive with the intensity of his gaze—compelling and magnetic.
