EXCERPTS:

He left the oil lamp on, surprising her. His lifting of the covers was not a surprise, nor his quietly spoken, “Ganina.”

She opened her eyes.
“I didn’t want to frighten you.”
“I wasn’t frightened,” she lied. It felt like something was clutching her throat with choking hands. Senec studied her by lamplight.

“You are very beautiful,” he said softly. She couldn’t answer.
“Did my father touch you? As a husband?” She just shook her head.

“Did you take a lover?”

If he believed that, the danger was incalculable. “My Lord, no!”

“You were wed but never bedded,” he pointed out. “An awkward state for a young woman. Tell me truthfully, did you seek a man? I will forgive you one, if so, but tell me now.”

“I did not!” she said vehemently. “Your women call me a slut, but I never was. Never!”

To her surprise, Senec smiled. Only a fleeting smile, but unmistakable. He reached to place one finger beneath her chin, lifting it so that she would face him, willing or not. “I will know if you are lying.”

“I am not lying.”
“All right.”
She closed her eyes, feeling his weight as he got into the bed beside her.

Ganina had not shared a bed since childhood and just the fact that she felt him sink the mattress alarmed her, accentuating as it did his greater size and strength. The day had been a triumph for Senec; he was freed of his father’s control, his half-brother’s enmity and his shrewish wives. She expected him to put the final tally to his sheet, but to her surprise he only pulled two pillows under his head and shoulders, resting his head against his upper arm. The light cast a miniscule nimbus, lending an intimacy to the occasion that she did not want. It made him seem somehow less threatening, which surely was an illusion.

“Did you bathe?” he inquired amiably.
“Yes. Did you have the bath sent?”
“Yes.”
“Thank you.” In the course of two years, Ganina had exchanged perhaps a hundred words with Senec. She really had no idea who he was. “It was a great pleasure.”

“I do not think you had many pleasures in the tent of the wives.”

No, she had always feared a scorpion in her shoe or a blade in her back. She wondered suddenly if Senec entertained the same fear. How would it be for a man, sleeping with women who had done murder? Was that why he had sent them away? He seemed fond of his little daughters. Had it not pained him to part with them? But there was no sign of grief in his face. There was no sign of anything, not even desire. She had no idea what he was thinking.

Fantasy poetry driven by myths and legends has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I was published in poetry before catching the romance writing bug. I bring that background to my writing along with a lifelong addiction to horses, an 18 year career in various areas of psychiatric social services and many trips to Ireland, where I nurture my muse. My published works range from contemporary fantasy romance to fantasy historical, futuristic, science fiction and historical romance. Currently I live in rural Pennsylvania with a “motley crew” of rescue animals. You can see my books at www.miriamnewman.com.
