INTERVIEW

  1. What or who inspired you to start writing? I’m not sure where my inspiration came from, but my 9thgrade English teacher, Alex, encouraged me to write. Maybe she saw potential in what I was writing in class and started the engine behind everything. I wish I could find her to thank her for helping me discover this passion.
  2. How did you come up with ideas for your books? All of my stories come from some of my real life situations. I often take something small and just expand it into a story.

3. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans? I have many writing projects in the works. I’m already working on Is Blood Thick part 2 so be patient, there will be three parts to this project. I’m also working on a novel titled Quest that’s dedicated to my cousin Salim. I don’t want to get into specifics on that project, but it’ll be the most personal of all my writings. The Money Team is a story I’ve been working on for years, but I want to make sure it’s perfect before releasing it because it’s another personal project. Urban Legends Publishing will be re-releasing Lock and Load, a project I worked on with Ace Capone, later this year so be on the lookout for that. I think after Quest and Is Blood Thicker part 2 we’ll drop Queen Ding-A-Ling.

  1. If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why? I think there’s a little of me in all of my major characters, but I think I relate more to Caesar from Is Blood Thicker and Taz from The Money Team. I say Caesar because I feel like he tries to do the right thing but there’s another person that’s buried deep that people don’t want to meet. Taz has a level of confidence that no one can disturb, no matter how hard people try.
  2. If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your leading roles? I would love to cast Lena Waithe as Daquan, Gabrielle Union as Aviana, Teyana Taylor as Roneeka, Jamie Hector as Caesar, Jesse Usher as Nolan, JT from City Girls and as Hunei.
  3. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step? My mom and aunts Waby and Libby has been encouraging me to keep writing since I began sharing my works with people. I started with writing lyrics then moved to poetry. After that I wrote a stage play then discovered I like writing novels. They’re always asking me about stories I started but stopped writing, which then makes me want to finish those stories. I share all my work with them first, if they like it and can see the vision then I move forward with completing it.
  4. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing). The best advice I’ve received as a publisher came from my manager, Theresa. I was so stressed about a few behind the scenes issues and she said “Look, worry about yourself right now. Put your project out first!” That advice allowed me to complete Is Blood Thicker and release it. The worst advice I received as a writer was to take a break. I understand some may need a break, but when I take a break my brain get flooded with thoughts for stories and I need a way to get them out.
  5. Do you outline your books or just start writing? I just start writing. I tried to outline before and became uninterested in my story. So I never know what the ending to my stories are going to be.
  6. Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book? I’m working on Quest and Is Blood Thicker part 2 right now. I won’t go too deep into Quest, but it’s dedicated to my cousin who was murdered earlier this year. Just stay tuned for the story. Is Blood Thicker part 2 will have a whole new cast. I may bring over a few from part 1, but part 3 will tie the previous books together. Be ready for another roller coaster ride.
    10. Who is your favorite actor and actress? My favorite actresses are Angela Bassett and Taraji P. Henson.
  7. Can you tell us a little about the black moment in your book? I think the black moment occurred when Roneeka came face to face with Grease in the bathroom. I don’t want to give too much away, but that moment was hard to write because I had to tap into the rage inside of myself.
  8. What is your favorite reality show? Marriage Boot Camp Hip Hop edition LOL. I don’t know why, but I like that show.

EXCERPT:

Daquan rushed back to his SUV. He grabbed his tablet and studied the app. It still said Aviana was at the school. There was nothing else to do but wait so that’s what he did. Thirty minutes passed and there was still no sign of Aviana. Just as Daquan got ready to pull off, someone came walking around the corner. At first, he paid them no attention. But they started towards Aviana’s car and instantly made Daquan watch them closer. He watched as they entered Aviana’s car. Although they dressed in all black Daquan knew that person wasn’t his wife.

The mystery person pulled off in Aviana’s car, leaving Daquan conflicted on what to do next. He quickly decided to follow Aviana’s Altima as it traveled through West Philly until it reached Upper Darby. The Altima pulled onto a small block and Daquan carefully followed. Soon the driver pulled into a driveway of a small house and shut the engine off. From down the block, he noticed the driver didn’t get out of the car. Slowly, he drove down the icy street, squinting his eyes at the Altima, hoping to get a look at the driver. No luck. There was no way he was going to be able to see inside with the combination of tint on the window and darkness outside. Instead, Daquan made a mental note of the house.
