Have you ever listened to the stars in the sky? Sure, we can see them and they’re beautiful, but have you ever listened to them? Imagine a beachside cottage porch chockablock with brass windchimes during a turbulent and wildly windy summer storm, and that is how loudly the stars speak to me. The stars do sing out in an otherworldly and beautiful roar that you will hear with your eyes and all of your senses, really, but only if you truly listen. They shine and twinkle for you and for me.

I am out every night just before sleep star-gazing and enjoying Mother Nature’s concert, even in winter. From my balcony I look up at the stars and think of my dear friends scattered across the planet, and I smile because I know they are under the same sky and stars as I am, so they really aren’t so far away at all.

Unfortunately, I cannot see many stars most nights because the light pollution from the concrete jungle I live in swallows them up. On a good night, I see 30 stars. One evening while driving the overseas highway from Miami to Key West at midnight, I looked up and was gobsmacked by the number of and the blinding brilliance of the stars. I had forgotten how the night sky looked, and I actually teared up at the sight of it. I don’t know where my tears ended and the stars’ light began. I hadn’t seen that since I was a child camping in a remote area. It planted a seed in my heart to find a place to go where I could see even more stars. I was on a mission and after coming across a fantastic documentary called Cielo about the scientists studying the skies in Chile, I knew I had found that place. Within six months I was on a plane by myself and headed eventually to the Atacama Desert.
