INTERVIEW:

  1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

It started in kindergarten. My teacher was reading this story to the class, and I was enraptured until the ridiculous ending which ruined the magic for me. At home I rewrote the ending the way I thought it should go and I’ve been writing ever since.

  1. How did you come up with ideas for your books?

I’ve always been captivated with mystery stories, and I guess it’s for that reason that all my own books have ended up focusing around a mystery in one way or another. I usually take something I know inside out (like babysitting in this case), then slap a mystery around it to make an interesting tale.

3. What expertise did you bring to your writing?

Well, I’m not sure it’s expertise, exactly, but I spent many of my young years as a babysitter, daycare worker, and even a nanny. I took from my experiences—and exaggerated a bit too—to add to Mallory’s troubles and victories with the children in her care.

5. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

I have so many ideas I’d love to put down in print, but I’ve really struggled with time management when it comes to actually accomplishing that. I do hope to finish my first science fiction novel this year.

  1. If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?

In The Nanny SongI’d definitely want to be Mallory. She’s tough enough to admit her flaws and overcome them. She’s also much younger than me, so who wouldn’t want a life do-over? 😊

9. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

When I was twelve my mother sent in one of my manuscripts to a local publisher. I was angry at first because I didn’t like anyone reading my work. But that would end up being my first experience getting published and I’d have never done it on my own.

  1. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)
    11. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

I always start with an outline where I work out at least a few chapters in advance. Then, I usually get too eager to bring those chapters to life before finishing my outline completely, so I end up going back and forth from the outline to the draft.

13. Do you have an all time favorite book?

There are somany books, actually, so I’ve forced myself to pick just one. I read HarriettheSpywhen I was around 10 or 11, and it infected my life to the point that I wanted be Harriet. I started eating tomato sandwiches every day, just like she did in the story. Even though I secretly found them mushy and disgusting, I never once betrayed my love for Harriet by saying so out loud. (Until now. Sorry Harriet.) I also began carrying around a notebook just like her to write about anything and everyone I saw. This lasted for years. Around 14 or 15 years old I finally started to be embarrassed by surreptitiously jotting things in the corner of a room while everyone else wondered what in the world I was doing.

  1. Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?

I’m currently working on a space-opera-style science fiction that is set in two separate but connected time periods. It’s very different from anything else I’ve written but I’m having a ton of fun with it.

  1. 19. Anything else you might want to add?

I want my readers to know that I appreciate and value the support of every single one of you! Thanks for sharing in my inner world.

BLURB:

A dismal pall hangs over the Colt residence. Since the death of his wife, Brendan Colt has struggled to care for his children, Kason and Meela. Each is lost in their own deep grief, but there is more to this family than meets the eye.

After her tumultuous childhood, Mallory Riscoe has deftly avoided change. But her life is due for an upheaval when she’s fired from her sales associate position and takes on the role of nanny in the Colt household.

Mallory soon realizes she might have taken on more than she can handle when she finds more than two mischievous children haunting the grand, creaky house. If it isn’t the children’s brash uncle or schoolyard bullies, she finds herself confronted with strange sounds coming from the attic and suspicious late-night behavior from Brendan Colt himself.

It’s only when Mallory begins to feel a connection between not just herself and the children but their father too, that an unspeakable secret is uncovered. Is this new bond—and possibly Mallory’s life itself—now at risk?

EXCERPT:

Brendan kept driving to the point that Mallory began to think he was leaving the city. Ghastly ideas were bouncing around inside her head as she was trying to figure out where Brendan could be heading. Did he know she was following him? Was he leading her away anyhow, just to see how far she would go? She had very nearly come to the worst conclusion possible when the Lincoln finally turned off onto a side street and parked alongside the curb…

She watched him walk across a dark lawn without so much as a glance to either side. He kept walking until his figure blended in with the night…

She knew she was being reckless and prayed no one would see her as she slipped out of the car and made her way through the shadows to the spot where she had watched Brendan disappear…

Her eyes were adjusting to the dark now, and with the moon up above she could clearly make out a tall iron fence, its gates standing open at the end of the path. Behind the enclosure were headstones of all sizes and shapes, some gleaming in the hazy luminescence, some dull and indistinct. Mallory hadn’t even realized she was at a graveyard before then, and she got a funny feeling in her gut when she finally became aware of the eerie setting.

A chilly breeze had picked up and it whispered all around her…
