Solar Eclipses

A solar eclipse is amazing to see with the correct safety equipment, but you should never look directly at a solar eclipse or the Sun.

There are four types of solar eclipses that can be seen on Earth: total, partial, annular and hybrid. They can all be calculated well into the future.

Solar eclipses are incredibly special because of the size of the Moon in relation to the Sun and the distance they are from each other. If the distances between the two were further apart or closer together, we would not see a precise alignment of the Moon’s disc perfectly covering the Sun from edge to edge.

Total Solar Eclipse

Full solar eclipses occur when the Sun is totally blocked by the Moon and are only visible from specific parts of the Earth. Because the Moon is small, its shadow will only pass over specific parts of the Earth and not everyone will be able to see a total solar eclipse from their location. Areas near the path of the total eclipse shadow will see only a partial covering of the Sun by the Moon, called a partial eclipse.

Partial Solar Eclipse

Partial solar eclipses are still very much an amazing phenomenon. Even though a total solar eclipse may be visible in some places, if your location is just outside of the total eclipse shadow path, you will see a partial eclipse.

Annular Solar Eclipse

Annular eclipses occur when the Moon does not entirely cover the Sun and can occur due to the orbit of the Moon around the Earth being in the shape of an ellipsis and not perfectly circular. When this kind of eclipse occurs, a bright ring of the Sun can still be seen around the outside of the Moon and is called the ring of fire.

Hybrid Solar Eclipse

These eclipses are a combination of an annular eclipse and a total solar eclipse. The event starts as one type and transitions to the other type.

Scott’s passion for light and the electromagnetic spectrum began in his early teens while tinkering with electronics as a hobby. He was formally introduced to the lighting industry while studying Electrical and Electronics in Sydney, Australia, and in 1998 he started his career making custom light fittings and lamps in his dad’s garage. Formal lighting design qualifications expanded his opportunity to help project-manage and design on many industry levels.

Twenty-two years on, and Scott has worked on many major infrastructure, commercial and architectural lighting projects. He is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia & New Zealand, the Colour Society of Australia, the International Dark Sky Association and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.
